Dining: Little Pearl

July 17, 2018 Russell W. Warnick

The Little Pearl Burger

I was recently comparing notes on new restaurants with a friend, he's adventurous and probably eats out more than I do. I offered up Little Pearl (new to me) on Capitol Hill, but instead of an enthusiastic thumbs up it was met with a snarl, a pretty harsh, and perhaps unwarranted one at that.

Little Pearl is a cafe by day, wine bar at night. It's a beautiful restaurant on the grounds of The Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital, set-back among the trees behind the wrought-iron fence. The double moniker of cafe-wine bar might confuse some, expectations of what is in store, it's much more casual cafe than it is a wine bar, perhaps too much so. Run by Aaron Silverman of Rose's Luxury and Pineapple & Pearls, the menu is a mix of serious but playful, which shouldn't be a shock to anyone.

Dish: Rock Shrimp Okonomiyaki

May 3, 2018 Russell W. Warnick

There are a few dishes at Beuchert's Saloon that don't look like the rest, the whole menu is worth eating but there are a couple of stand out dishes that are, well, outstanding. The Rock Shrimp Okonomiyaki is one, I've been telling everyone about it since having it last weekend. A Japanese pancake topped with watermelon radish, sorrel, toasted shallots and a sweet soy sauce, and a drizzle of lemon cream which adds just a touch of fun to what is otherwise a pretty serious dish.

Drinks: Cava Mezze

The ever expanding restaurant scene in Washington inevitably brings with it the ever expanding, and sophisticated cocktail menu, with Cava Mezze being no exception. Glendon Hartley helms the bar across the Cava restaurants, who you may know from BlackSalt, Lost Society and my office favorite, Founding Farmers.

I was invited for an evening of imbibing on Cava's Capitol Hill rooftop, a beautiful spot overlooking Barracks Row. The cocktails offer a twist on old favorites, Hartley brings a fresh and unique approach - the Huele De Noche (smell of night, thanks Google translate) brings together Angostura Bitters to provide balance to the sweetness of the Patron Blanco Tequila, mixed with fresh squeezed lime and coconut. As someone who can't nor shouldn't drink tequila straight up or stomach more than one margarita for being too sweet it was a nice alternative use of tequila.
